RITA award

A big congratulations to one of my fav authors, Deanna Raybourn, for winning the 2008 RITA Award for Best Novel with Strong Romantic Elements for her first novel, Silent in the Grave. RITAs are like the Oscars of the romance novel genre and are given by the Romance Writers of America.

Normally I'm not much for typical RITA fare, which is to say straight romance novels (it's the covers; I can't take the intertwined half-naked people on the covers), but as you can tell from the name of the award, Raybourn's writing crosses boundaries. Her books are historical mysteries with more than a touch of romance but NO cheesiness. You'll inhale them in a few days or less because they're impossible to put down. (And the covers of both her books are elegantly beautiful; absolutely no half-naked people.)

I've reviewed her first two books here and here on A Novel Idea and am waiting on her third, Silent on the Moor. It's due out next year. Check out her blog entry for a pic of her with the award. It's shiny gold and I totally want one.

You are right about the covers - they are very beautiful. Far different from the standard romance cover.
